A tribunal ruled in favor of a Scots funeral director unfairly dismissed after cancer treatment, awarding her significant compensation
Aberdeen: So, there’s this funeral director named Janie Crampshee who just scored a big win. She was unfairly let go from her job after battling cancer. Can you believe that? She had been through a tough time with treatment and was just trying to get back to her “dream job.”
The tribunal found that her employer, Dignity Funerals, didn’t really give her a fair shot when she returned. They didn’t allow her to ease back into her full role after her treatment. Janie had been with the company since 2014, and it was a real passion for her.
After being diagnosed with cancer in early 2016, she had to take a long break for treatment. When she came back in 2018, she was only working part-time. But it seems like the company was more focused on their bottom line than on supporting her recovery.
Janie mentioned that she couldn’t be on call or lift heavy things because of her fatigue from the treatment. An occupational health report even pointed out that her gradual return was causing issues for the business. But instead of being understanding, they fired her within a year.
She faced a lot of stress over her wages too. Janie said her pay was all over the place, and at one point, she only got £98 in a month! When they offered her a lower-paying admin job, she turned it down because it just wasn’t enough to live on.
In the end, the tribunal sided with her, saying Dignity should have been more patient and accommodating. They awarded her over £60,000 in compensation. It’s a tough situation, but at least she got some justice.
