Two carers who defrauded an elderly couple have been told to repay only £1 each after their convictions for fraud.
Sheerness: It’s a pretty shocking story. Two carers, Jodie Percival and Gemma Day, stole over £12,000 from an elderly couple. They were supposed to help them, but instead, they took advantage of them.
They were caught after the couple’s family noticed some strange transactions in their bank account. Turns out, these two were regularly withdrawing cash from the couple’s account while they were supposed to be caring for them.
In court, it was revealed that Percival and Day would hit the cashpoint together, taking out hundreds at a time. They ended up pocketing a total of £12,170. Can you believe that?
Both women pleaded guilty but avoided jail time. Instead, they were ordered to pay back just £1 each because they claimed they had no money or assets. It’s hard to wrap your head around that, right?
During the hearings, Percival tried to shift the blame, saying she was scared due to an abusive relationship. But the court wasn’t buying it. They said she was just as involved in the scheme.
Sadly, by the time justice caught up with them, the elderly man had passed away, and his wife was in a care home. It’s just a heartbreaking situation all around.
Even though they only have to pay back a nominal amount now, if their financial situations change, they could still be on the hook for more. Let’s hope they think twice before pulling something like this again.
