Sheffield: A Sheffield Wednesday fan, David Spencer, recently dodged a football ban after a court decision. He was in hot water for shouting and swearing during a local derby match.

At 56, Spencer faced a hefty fine and the possibility of missing out on his beloved team’s games. He was found guilty of racially abusing a 15-year-old boy at a Hull City match. That’s a tough spot for any fan!

Spencer, who’s been a loyal supporter for over 30 years, was really worried about the ban. He had already been fined £1,375 and was feeling the heat from the magistrates. But he didn’t want to miss out on the action.

The case went to Hull Crown Court after the prosecution appealed the magistrates’ decision not to impose a ban. The judge and two magistrates had to sort it all out.

During the match on August 12, 2023, Spencer was in the away section when he allegedly shouted some nasty words at the young fan. The boy was upset enough to report it to a steward, which led to Spencer being handed over to the police.

Spencer insisted he didn’t mean any harm. He admitted to swearing but claimed it was just banter among fans. He said he’s been going to games since he was a kid and has never been in trouble before.

Judge Mark Bury noted that Spencer wasn’t the only one shouting during the match. He pointed out that it was all part of the rivalry and there was no real threat involved. The judge decided it would be unfair to impose a ban on Spencer.

In a light-hearted moment, Judge Bury joked, “We won’t hold that against him,” allowing Spencer to continue supporting his team without worry.

Spencer didn’t challenge the original conviction but was relieved to keep attending games. It’s a win for him and a reminder that sometimes, it’s just football banter!
