Shildon: Shildon Alive has been doing some incredible work in the community. They run a food bank, a credit union, and even a befriending service. It’s all about helping people out.

They’ve got these two community gardens where folks can learn to grow their own food. It’s a great way to pick up gardening skills and meet new people.

When they were nominated, it was clear that their focus on inclusivity and practical help is really making a difference. They’re building a supportive and sustainable community.

Paula Nelson, the manager, was totally surprised when they won the Community/Voluntary Group of the Year Award. She stepped up to accept the trophy and couldn’t believe it.

She said, “I really was not expecting this – I don’t know who nominated us. This is an amazing achievement.” It’s been a journey since 2014, gathering those first volunteers and seeing the passion in the town grow.

Paula added, “Despite the challenges, we’ve kept our community spirit alive. There’s real deprivation, but together we do amazing things.”
