In 2024, South East London bid farewell to several beloved pubs and bars
London: In 2024, South East Londoners said goodbye to some cherished pubs. It’s a real bummer when places that hold so many memories close their doors.
Take the London & Rye in Catford, for instance. This Wetherspoons spot was a local favorite for 24 years before shutting down in August. It was put up for sale for £850,000, which is a hefty price tag for a place that had seen so much life.
The pub was named after the old road that used to run by it, and it was housed in a charming 19th-century building. You could almost feel the history there, with merchants passing through back in the day.
Then there’s the Star of Greenwich, which closed on November 8 due to some serious rent issues. The landlord, Greenwich Hospital, was after £50,000 in arrears. Pub manager Kirsty Dunlop mentioned they needed to raise funds to keep it open, but sadly, their efforts fell short.
And let’s not forget about Good Neighbour, which had branches in Camberwell and Peckham. They shut down all three of their bars on March 5. They posted on social media about the tough times in hospitality, and it really hit home for many.
Have you heard of any other pubs that closed in 2024? We’d love to hear your stories!
