The Democratic Party warns of impeachment if acting president fails to act on martial law investigation
Seoul: So, the drama in South Korea is heating up. The opposition party is really putting the pressure on acting president Han Duck Soo. They’re saying if he doesn’t get a special counsel investigation rolling about Yoon Suk Yeol’s martial law mess, they’ll move to impeach him.
Yoon got impeached back in December after trying to impose martial law, which caused a lot of chaos. Now, Han is in charge while Yoon’s powers are on hold. The Democratic Party is pushing hard to get a special counsel appointed to look into Yoon’s actions and even his wife’s luxury bag scandal.
They’re not holding back either. They’ve accused Han of helping Yoon with the martial law attempt and have reported him to the police. If he doesn’t act by Tuesday, they’re ready to kick off impeachment proceedings against him.
Democratic Party leader Park Chan Dae is pretty vocal about it, saying the delays show Han isn’t serious about following the constitution. He’s been in politics for a long time, so this isn’t just a casual accusation.
Han has claimed he tried to stop Yoon’s martial law declaration but later apologized to parliament for not succeeding. The opposition is also calling out Yoon for not cooperating with the Constitutional Court, which is looking into the whole situation.
Park is adamant that any delay in the investigation is just prolonging the chaos. Yoon is facing serious scrutiny from prosecutors and a joint police team over the insurrection claims, but he’s denying everything and plans to defend himself in court.
Last week, the head of the ruling People Power Party even stepped down because he supported Yoon’s impeachment. He’s worried about potential violence if martial law isn’t lifted and is taking a stand against what he sees as illegal actions.
