A driver who caused serious injuries in a high-speed crash has avoided jail time, raising concerns about justice for victims.
Sandwich: A driver named Adrijus Luksenas, who hit a couple at nearly 100mph, has dodged jail time. It’s a shocking case, right? He left Lilianna Nicholls and David Emanuel seriously hurt after crashing into their car on the A256.
After the crash, Luksenas didn’t even stick around. He called his girlfriend to pick him up while the couple lay unconscious. They were on holiday, and Mr. Emanuel was planning to propose. Can you imagine that?
At just 20 years old, Luksenas was feeling angry after a fight with his partner. He was uninsured and over the drug limit when he crashed into their Ford Fiesta. Despite the serious injuries he caused, he walked away from court without a prison sentence.
He looked pretty upset when the judge told him he wouldn’t go to jail, mainly because he’s now a dad. The couple, who don’t live in the UK, weren’t even there to see what happened in court.
They had no memory of the crash, which happened when they were unfamiliar with the area. Ms. Nicholls was driving carefully, but Luksenas came up so fast that he couldn’t stop in time. It’s just heartbreaking.
Witnesses said he was speeding, and the prosecutor mentioned that the couple was trapped in their wrecked car. Instead of helping, Luksenas fled the scene. He was later found at his girlfriend’s place, where he was arrested.
He passed a breathalyzer but was over the limit for cannabis. The couple suffered serious injuries; Ms. Nicholls had a fractured collarbone and needed surgery, while Mr. Emanuel had multiple injuries and spent days in the hospital.
In court, Mr. Emanuel expressed his frustration, trying to stay strong despite everything. Luksenas admitted to previous driving offenses and was banned from driving for a year.
His lawyer argued that he had changed since the incident, claiming he had grown up and taken responsibility. The judge decided to give him a chance, suspending a two-year sentence and ordering him to do community service instead.
He has to pay compensation to the victims, too. The judge made it clear that this is his last chance, warning him that any slip-up would land him in jail. It’s a tough situation, and many are left wondering if justice was truly served.
