Elgin’s St Giles Centre closure sparks concern but leaders vow to continue regeneration efforts
Elgin: The news about the St Giles Centre closing has really shocked everyone around here. It’s set to shut its doors on January 20, and folks are worried about what this means for the town.
Moray Council has been trying to collect a hefty amount of unpaid rates, around £750,000, which has piled up over the years. The centre, owned by Upland Developments, has shops like Argos, Subway, and Waterstones, but many spaces are empty.
Local politicians are stepping up. Richard Lochhead, the SNP MSP, expressed his disappointment, saying it’s tough for businesses to get such short notice. He’s been in talks with the council and local business groups to find a way to support the retailers and keep jobs safe.
Graham Leadbitter, the local MP, emphasized the need for everyone to work together to help the community. He’s committed to doing what he can to support those affected by the closure.
Council leader Kathleen Robertson acknowledged the situation is disappointing but believes it shouldn’t be seen as the end of Elgin’s regeneration. She’s hopeful that planned investments will help the town bounce back.
Marc Macrae, who heads the Economic Development Committee, also shared his disappointment. He reassured everyone that the council will do its best to assist the affected businesses and staff during this tough time.
