The closure of St Giles Centre raises questions about its impact on the community and local services
Elgin: So, the news about the St Giles Centre closing has really caught everyone off guard. It’s set to shut its doors on January 20, and folks are left wondering what’s next.
We reached out to Moray Council to get some answers on the burning questions. First up, will the car park still be open? Good news! It’ll stay in use just like before.
Now, what about the toilets? Unfortunately, they’ll be closed since they’re managed by the centre itself. So, no access once the building shuts down.
There’s also chatter about the £750,000 in unpaid non-domestic rates. The council said any action will depend on what happens with St Giles Holding Co Ltd.
And if they can’t recover that money, will taxpayers have to cover it? The council collects the rates, but the Scottish Government will step in to help cover any shortfall.
As for what happens to the building after January 20, the council isn’t in the loop about the owners’ plans. It’s all a bit up in the air.
Lastly, people are curious about the bus station and Stagecoach. The council is working with them to figure out what’s next for the bus station’s location.
A spokesperson from Stagecoach North Scotland mentioned they’re in talks with the local authority and will keep everyone updated once they have a plan.
