Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg avoids jail after admitting to years of domestic abuse against his estranged wife Gillian
Selkirk: So, it turns out Stuart Hogg, the former Scotland rugby captain, has dodged jail time after some pretty serious allegations. He admitted to abusing his ex-wife, Gillian, over five long years.
Hogg, who’s now playing for Montpellier in France, faced the music at Selkirk Sheriff Court. He pleaded guilty to domestic abuse, which included some really alarming behavior like tracking her movements and sending distressing messages.
It’s wild to think he was once celebrated in the sport, even getting an MBE last year. But his actions have really overshadowed that. The court heard he would shout at Gillian and even sent her over 200 texts in just a few hours. That’s just not okay.
He’s been given a community payback order and a year of supervision, plus a five-year non-harassment order. It’s a bit of a slap on the wrist considering what he put her through.
They moved to Exeter in 2019 with their kids, but things went downhill fast. Hogg’s partying and aggressive behavior took a toll on their relationship. Gillian even sought help from a domestic abuse service before finally deciding to leave him.
In September 2023, things got so bad that Gillian had a panic attack from the barrage of messages he sent her. It’s just heartbreaking to hear how much she suffered.
Hogg’s retired from rugby now, but he’s still got a long way to go in making things right. This story is still developing, so we’ll see what happens next.
