Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg admits to years of domestic abuse and awaits sentencing in a troubling case
Hawick: So, you’ve probably heard about Stuart Hogg, right? The former Scotland rugby captain is in some serious trouble. He’s admitted to abusing his estranged wife over five years. It’s a pretty shocking turn of events for someone who was once a celebrated athlete.
Hogg, who’s 32 and has four kids, confessed to a charge of domestic abuse that happened between 2019 and 2024. The incidents took place in various locations, including Hawick and Bearsden, near Glasgow. The court had to delay sentencing to figure out if he could get a community order with monitored supervision.
During the court proceedings, Hogg admitted to being abusive towards his ex-partner, Gillian Hogg. He would shout, swear, and even track her movements. It’s really sad to hear how he bombarded her with distressing messages, making her panic.
Prosecutor Drew Long shared that Hogg would get angry and shout at Gillian for not being “fun” after nights out with his mates. He sent over 200 texts in just a few hours, even after she asked him to stop. That’s just too much, right?
Things got worse when they moved to Exeter in 2019. Hogg’s behavior spiraled as he partied more, and Gillian’s family noticed she was changing. In 2022, she went out one night and was overwhelmed by his messages, which caught the attention of her friends.
After moving back to Hawick, Hogg even used an app to track her. It’s no wonder she sought help from a domestic abuse service in 2023. By September, his constant messaging led to her having a panic attack. It’s heartbreaking to think about what she went through.
In February 2024, Hogg ignored a no-contact order and became aggressive when he entered their home. The police had to step in after he was shouting and swearing. He was taken into custody and told not to contact Gillian again.
His defense attorney argued that while Hogg’s actions were unacceptable, they might not have met the legal threshold for prosecution. Still, he acknowledged that his behavior was criminal under the Domestic Abuse Act.
Now living abroad and going through a divorce, Hogg is set to appear in court again soon. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved, and it’s a reminder of how serious domestic abuse can be.
