A new mosaic in Hebburn showcases the town’s history, community spirit, and future innovators through vibrant artwork.
Hebburn: A beautiful new mosaic has been created in Hebburn, South Tyneside. The council and The Cultural Spring charity commissioned this artwork.
It was funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The mosaic highlights themes like history, innovation, civic pride, and community.
This artwork shines a light on Hebburn’s industrial past, including mining and shipbuilding. It also honors notable figures like scientist Elizabeth Shaw and geologist Arthur Holmes.
Mosaic artist Svetlana Kondakova-Muir led the project, chosen by local residents. She collaborated with community groups and schools, including Hebburn Lakes and St Aloysius.
They created self-portraits that represent Hebburn’s future innovators. Svetlana expressed her honor in working on this project.
She said Hebburn has a rich history with many interesting people. Their stories have shaped the town and will inspire future generations.
Svetlana enjoyed creating portraits of these characters. She also included elements from the past and present to tell Hebburn’s unique story.
Emma Scarr, project coordinator at The Cultural Spring, praised the project. She noted how it engaged local communities and schools.
Svetlana’s workshops were creative and fun. Emma hopes the children will cherish their portraits for years to come.
Councillor Margaret Meling highlighted the mosaic’s significance. She said it celebrates Hebburn’s history and the people who shaped it.
Public consultations showed that many wanted public art in the town. This mosaic will be a focal point for the community.
Graeme Thompson, chair of The Cultural Spring charity, expressed excitement about the project. He believes the mosaic beautifully celebrates Hebburn’s heritage and future.
The mosaic will be installed and unveiled in Hebburn in the coming weeks.
