Sussex is set to elect its first mayor following government approval. This new role promises increased local power and potential for more funding.
Council leaders representing Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, and West Sussex expressed interest in this change. Ministers approved the plan to create this authority, which will be led by a directly elected mayor.
The new authority would have seven members, including the mayor. Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, and West Sussex each get two members. This team would handle important issues such as transport, public safety, health, and the environment.
They would also handle climate change, housing, economic growth, jobs, and skills. Currently, Brighton & Hove has a ceremonial mayor who represents the area.
This ceremonial mayor welcomes important visitors and leads full council meetings. This new system could empower Sussex residents and help them influence national decisions. More local decisions are possible with this change, and the government will seek public input via a consultation.
