The Harland & Wolff yard in Fife had trouble. The order book was nearly empty. Spanish shipbuilder Navantia bought the firm and promised staff a good future.

The yard faced administration last September. Workers in Methil worried about their jobs, which also affected workers on the Isle of Lewis. Navantia’s purchase secured 350 jobs, and the company also plans long-term investments.

Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, visited Methil and met with workers and the UK industry minister. They think this is a key moment for the yard. Swinney called the takeover “a really important day.”

Swinney said the yards have a strong history and helped build Scotland’s industrial story. He welcomes the acquisition by Navantia. Securing the yard’s future was hard work, but Scotland has a big offshore energy opportunity, and Methil could play a major role.

Industry minister Sarah Jones discussed the situation, saying the government acted quickly and prevented Harland & Wolff’s collapse. They protected the workforce’s talent, and the Navantia deal offers long-term security.

Many workers remember past struggles, with orders and owners having come and gone before. Employee Mark Davidson welcomes the security and is happy to go on this journey with Navantia.

Derek Paul looks forward to a fresh start and says it’s great for apprentices. He anticipates a good future. Navantia promised to invest in the Scottish yards and also promised staff security. The work to secure new orders begins now.
