Boulogne-sur-Mer: A Syrian man tragically died while trying to cross the English Channel from France to the UK. This heartbreaking news was confirmed by the government.
On Friday night, over 30 people were rescued after their boat ran into trouble. The French Coastguard jumped into action, sending out helicopters and boats to help.
They managed to rescue 35 migrants, with about 15 of them found in the water. Sadly, the man was pronounced dead around 4:30 AM on Saturday, according to reports.
It seems he was crushed by other migrants while on a leaky dinghy, which is just awful. The survivors were taken to a rescue boat and brought back to Boulogne-sur-Mer, where they received help from local services.
One teenager was hospitalized but is in stable condition, which is a small relief in this tragic situation.
A spokesperson from the UK Government expressed their condolences, confirming the tragic incident and emphasizing the dangers of these small boat crossings.
They pointed out that these crossings are fraught with peril, and the criminals behind them only care about making money, not the lives they endanger.
The French coastguard also warned about the risks of crossing the Channel, noting that it’s one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with over 600 merchant ships passing through daily.
This incident comes as new figures show a significant rise in the number of migrants arriving in the UK via small boats, with 36,816 making the journey in 2024, a 25% increase from the previous year.
While this number is down from the record 45,774 arrivals in 2022, it still highlights the ongoing challenges faced by those seeking safety.
