Join the Kidderminster Historical Society for a fascinating talk on Chateau Impney’s rich history and its influential owner
Kidderminster: The Kidderminster Historical Society is putting on a lecture about Chateau Impney. It’s called ‘Chateau Impney, Droitwich – A Victorian Country House’. Sounds interesting, right?
This event is happening at The Museum of Carpet, located at Stour Vale Mill on Green Street. Mark your calendars for Thursday, January 23, at 2.30pm.
John Richard Hodges will be the speaker. He’s going to dive into the history of Impney Hall, which was built for John Corbett, known as the ‘Worcestershire Salt King’. Can you believe it was constructed between 1869 and 1875?
Corbett had quite the story. He started out as the son of a canal boat carrier and ended up a successful businessman and philanthropist. Talk about a glow-up!
The mansion really shows off Corbett’s wealth and influence. It was renamed Chateau Impney back in 1949, which gives it a bit of a fancy flair.
During the talk, Hodges will explore Corbett’s life and the history of Impney Hall, covering everything from Queen Victoria’s reign to modern times.
Hodges isn’t just a speaker; he’s also a part-time teacher and writer living in Worcester. He’s written 20 books, many about notable country houses. Quite the impressive resume!
His career has been pretty diverse. He started on a farm in Shropshire, then moved to Collins Publishing in London. He even taught in schools for kids with special needs.
He’s traveled too, working in a private school in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and in Paphos, Cyprus. What a journey!
The historical society is open to visitors at their meetings for a small fee. If you want to know more, check out their website at kdahs.org.
