Tamworth: So, there’s been quite a stir in Tamworth lately. Colin Stonehouse and David Kirkbride just got 21 months in jail for their part in some wild protests outside a hotel for asylum seekers.
These two guys were pretty emotional in court. Stonehouse, 36, was seen with his head in his hands, while 28-year-old Kirkbride was wiping away tears. They both pleaded guilty to violent disorder after joining a protest at the Holiday Inn Express last year.
Things got out of hand on August 4 when a crowd of hundreds showed up, causing nearly £100,000 in damage. They smashed windows and even started fires. It all kicked off after the Southport stabbings, which really stirred up tensions.
The prosecutor laid it all out in court. Stonehouse was shouting at the police, and Kirkbride was right there with him, egging people on. They were seen laughing when a firework went off, which is just wild.
When the police caught them, Stonehouse said he was just unhappy about taxes going to asylum seekers. He claimed he left when things got too crazy, but it was too late by then.
Their lawyer said they’ve spent four long months in custody and made a “stupid decision.” The judge made it clear that their actions were part of a bigger problem and that violence like this can’t be tolerated.
It’s a tough situation, especially with all the unrest happening across the UK after the tragic deaths of three girls at a dance class. It’s a reminder that things can escalate quickly when emotions run high.
