Transport for London halts the down escalator at Blackhorse Road Station, impacting commuters with mobility issues until July
London: Starting tomorrow, Blackhorse Road Station will be without its down escalator for six months. This is due to some essential maintenance work by Transport for London (TfL).
Commuters are understandably upset, especially those with mobility issues. Without a lift, they won’t be able to access the Victoria Line during this time.
TfL informed locals that they need to replace old parts in both escalators. They plan to take them out of service one at a time, so at least one will still be working to help in emergencies.
They’ve apologized for the hassle, saying that these repairs will make the escalators safer and more reliable in the long run. But for now, it’s a tough situation for many.
For those who can’t manage the 89 steps down to the platforms, TfL suggests taking the 230 bus to Walthamstow Central or the 120/230 to Tottenham Hale, which is step-free.
People have been venting their frustrations on social media. One parent asked how they’re supposed to manage with a baby and a pushchair. Another person expressed disbelief at the six-month timeline.
In addition, TfL is also planning to replace the lift at Walthamstow Bus Station in April, which has been out of service since late last year due to safety works.
This closure followed a tragic incident where a 74-year-old woman was struck by a bus at the station. The works include better signage and road resurfacing to improve safety.
It’s a tough time for local news too, with independent outlets facing challenges. If you find value in community reporting, consider supporting your local news.
