The Ship Inn faces a one-star hygiene rating after a recent inspection revealed major improvements are needed
Middlestone: The Ship Inn just got hit with a one-star hygiene rating after a food safety inspection on November 27. The inspectors said major improvements are needed.
This cozy country pub is known for its stunning views of the Cleveland Hills and tasty Sunday lunches. But it seems they need to step up their food safety game.
The inspection looked at how well the staff knows food safety and whether they have the right checks in place to keep food safe. Unfortunately, they didn’t pass this part.
They also got flagged for cleanliness and the overall condition of the place. Things like layout, ventilation, and pest control need some work, along with how food is handled and stored.
A spokesperson mentioned that they have a plan to fix things before Durham County Council comes back to reassess. They’ll be getting rid of some old equipment that’s been making deep cleaning tough.
They’re hoping to bump that rating back up to four or five stars once everything’s sorted out.
Despite the rating, The Ship Inn has a solid 4.6-star rating on Google. People rave about it being a traditional pub with a real local vibe.
One customer shared, “Just took my boys here for a lovely lunch. The food was amazing, and the staff were super friendly. Can’t wait to go back!”
Another said, “Absolutely blown away by this local find. Great hospitality and delicious home-cooked food at a good price.”
It’s got that warm, inviting feel with an open fire, and it’s just five minutes from home for many locals.
They’re definitely planning to return. The Northern Echo has reached out to Durham County Council for the full hygiene report.
