Despite police warnings, crowds flocked to Birmingham for a non-existent fireworks display on New Year’s Eve
Birmingham: Last night, a ton of party-goers showed up in Centenary Square, all hyped for a fireworks show that turned out to be a total bust. This hoax was all over social media, and folks were really looking forward to the spectacle.
But the West Midlands Police were on patrol, letting everyone know that there was no event happening. It seems like some social media posts and AI chatter made it sound like a big fireworks display was on, but it was just a big fat lie.
Even though the police and security were outnumbered, things stayed mostly chill. At midnight, people cheered, and one guy even set off a firework, but there was no organized show to be found.
Before all this, the police had warned everyone about the hoax and asked them not to come to Centenary Square. They really didn’t want people to be let down after making the trip.
A police spokesperson said they were aware of the rumors and confirmed there was no fireworks display planned. They wanted to keep people from traveling into the city only to be disappointed.
Superintendent Emlyn Richards also chimed in, saying there were no plans for a fireworks show this year. He emphasized that they wanted everyone to have a good time at the bars and venues around the city instead.
