Over 3,000 single-parent households in Havering will benefit from a £50 council tax reduction aimed at supporting vulnerable families this winter
Havering: Thousands of low-income families are getting a nice break on their council tax. The council is rolling out a £50 reduction for those who really need it.
This reduction is especially for over 3,000 single-parent households. It’s all thanks to the Household Support Fund, which aims to help families during the colder months.
If you’re a single parent already getting Council Tax Support, you don’t have to do anything. The reduction will show up automatically on your next bill. Just a heads up, though: it’s non-refundable and can’t be used for other debts.
Council Leader Ray Morgon mentioned that this is just one way they’re trying to help vulnerable residents. Even with financial pressures, they’re committed to supporting those in need.

The council is also tackling the rising cost of living with other initiatives. For example, they have:
- Havering Helps: This emergency assistance scheme helps residents in urgent need with essentials like food and heating.
- Warm Spaces: There are warm spaces in libraries and community centers where folks can hang out and stay warm for free.
- Energy Doctors Programme: This free service gives advice on cutting energy costs and can help with small home repairs, potentially saving families up to £209 a year.
