Nearly 5,000 signatures have been gathered to protect the Devon Dumpling from closure amid community concerns
Torquay: Almost 5,000 folks have jumped on a petition to save the Devon Dumpling, a beloved pub that’s been around for about 80 years. It’s a real gem in the Shiphay community.
But things are getting a bit dicey. The landlords, Ray and Matt Lyon, are facing a hearing next month that could put their license at risk. This all started after some neighbors complained about noise and raised concerns about an outside bar and a smoking area that’s not up to snuff.
Licensing officials have been in touch with the pub since last year, and after a previous review, they’re now calling for another one. The community is rallying, though, with a petition that’s gained nearly 5,000 signatures in just a few weeks.
The petition emphasizes the need for transparency and urges locals to support the pub. They’ve got 28 days to gather evidence to save it, and the pub is asking everyone to stay positive and united.
Manager Josh Ballard kicked off the petition, highlighting how the Devon Dumpling is more than just a place to grab a drink. It’s a cornerstone of the neighborhood, where friendships blossom and memories are made.
He’s worried about the potential for reduced hours and restrictions, stressing that losing the pub would mean losing a piece of the community’s history. The Dumpling is a gathering spot for all sorts of folks, from local businesspeople to hospital staff, and it’s been a hub for charity events.
Local councillor Darren Cowling, who’s also a regular at the pub, calls it a vital community asset. He encourages everyone to voice their support to the local authority, emphasizing the pub’s role in raising money for good causes.
Josh mentioned the overwhelming support they’ve received, joking that if he had a pound for every supportive comment, he’d be a millionaire by now. The pub has been a staple for years, and the community is determined to keep it alive.
A spokesperson from Torbay Council confirmed they’re reviewing the pub’s license due to ongoing issues. They’re encouraging anyone who wants to weigh in on the review to do so before January 13, 2025, and more details are available on their website.
