Three drivers have been banned from the roads after serious offenses in Elgin, highlighting ongoing issues with substance abuse behind the wheel.
Elgin: Three drivers recently faced the music in Elgin Sheriff Court for some pretty serious driving offenses. It’s a real wake-up call about the dangers of driving under the influence.
It all started on August 6 when the police got a call about a guy who drove off after being refused service at The Grampian Hotel in Keith. They tracked him down to Netherea Road in Buckie, just as he was getting out of his car.
William Cormack, 53, took a roadside breath test, which came back negative for both alcohol and drugs. But the officers weren’t convinced and took him in for a blood test. Turns out, he had cocaine in his system at over seven times the safe limit for driving. He got a 16-month ban and two years of court supervision.
Then there’s Andrew McBean from Elgin, who got pulled over on the A96 on August 11. His breath test showed a reading of 134, which is more than six times the legal limit. He had a previous conviction for the same thing back in 2016, so he’s now banned for three years and has to stay home at night for four months.
Lastly, on November 21, John Inrig was involved in a crash while waiting at temporary lights on the A96. He didn’t stop in time and hit another car. The other driver thought he smelled alcohol, so they called the police. Inrig’s breath test showed a reading of 53, which is above the legal limit of 22. This was his second drink-driving conviction, and he got a two-year ban along with a year of court supervision.
