Torfaen Council is moving forward with plans to buy a camera car to tackle parking violations in the area
Torfaen: The council is getting closer to using a camera car to keep an eye on parking violations. They’ve put together a business case for this vehicle, and it just needs the green light from the cabinet member in charge.
Back in March last year, they mentioned that they were thinking about getting a car, and they aimed to have a business case ready by the end of the year. The latest update shows that while things fell behind schedule for a bit, they’ve now wrapped up the business case and report.
Once the cabinet member signs off, they can start getting the car and setting everything up. The idea is to have a camera car, like the one in Newport, patrol near schools to catch drivers parking where they shouldn’t, like on zig-zag lines.
Right now, the council has four enforcement officers trying to cover all the schools and respond to complaints from teachers. Gavin Newman, who leads the highways and traffic team, mentioned that many councils already use camera cars, and they can really help keep areas around schools and bus stops clear.
He estimates that getting a car and equipping it will cost between £30,000 and £50,000. The council is also keen to work with local communities to tackle illegal parking issues at schools.
