A Torquay man has been sentenced for violently attacking his ex-girlfriend, leaving her injured and traumatized after a heated argument
Torquay: A man named Andrew Coomber has been sentenced for a brutal attack on his ex-girlfriend. It all went down at her home during a heated argument.
He really lost it, strangling her and throwing punches. The poor woman ended up with a black eye and bruises all over. She was left feeling completely devastated.
Coomber, 37, from Walnut Road, pleaded guilty to several charges, including intentional strangulation. The judge handed him a 16-month prison sentence.
This incident took place on December 9, after they had been arguing over text messages. When he showed up at her place, things escalated quickly.
The judge described how Coomber grabbed her by the throat, restricting her breathing, and dragged her into the living room where the violence continued. He hit her in the face twice, causing serious injuries.
He even threw her to the ground and grabbed her leg. She managed to escape to the bathroom, realizing she was bleeding and couldn’t breathe.
After she threatened to call the police, he took her phone and left. The next day, he was arrested and downplayed the situation, saying he just gave her “a tap.”
His lawyer mentioned that Coomber has some undiagnosed mental health issues and was really sorry for what he did.
The judge made it clear that domestic strangulation is taken very seriously. He pointed out that those who strangle often escalate to more severe violence.
He also noted that Coomber posed a medium risk to future partners and had issues controlling his temper. In the end, the judge decided that immediate custody was necessary for such a serious case of domestic abuse.
