Gloucester sees a surge in tourism, with visitors spending millions and boosting the local economy significantly this year
Gloucester: It’s buzzing with tourists lately! New reports show that visitors are pouring in and spending big bucks. In 2023 alone, they dropped around £246 million in the city, which is pretty impressive.
This influx has given the local economy a nice boost, totaling about £310 million. That’s a lot of cash flowing into shops, restaurants, and cafes. It’s great news for local businesses!
According to Visit Gloucester, the city’s tourism group, over a third of that spending went to shopping, while another chunk went to dining out. Councillor Caroline Courtney highlighted how crucial tourism is for Gloucester’s economy.
She mentioned that they’re working hard to make the city even more appealing. With new projects like the Food Dock and a vibrant events program, they’re aiming to enhance the experience for both visitors and locals.
Gloucester is currently second in the county for day trips and third for staycations. And with the upcoming Hotel Indigo opening, they expect even more visitors to stick around.
This new boutique hotel is set to attract those coming for sports and cultural events, encouraging them to stay in the city instead of heading back home after the fun.
Visit Gloucester is also ramping up its promotional efforts, teaming up with local partners to showcase the city’s attractions and events. Plus, they’re planning to improve signage to help visitors navigate and discover all the great spots.
With new landmarks like The Forum and the University of Gloucestershire’s city campus opening in 2025, there’s a lot to look forward to!
