A policewoman and a man were killed on the A19 while assisting crash victims, prompting an investigation into the incident.
North Yorkshire: A tragic accident unfolded when a policewoman was struck by a lorry while helping at another crash site. It happened on the A19 near Thirsk on Saturday morning.
PC Rosie Prior was on the roadside when she and two others were hit by a heavy goods vehicle just before 9 am. Sadly, both she and Ryan Welford, a 41-year-old from Knaresborough involved in the first crash, died at the scene.
A teenage boy, who was a passenger in Welford’s car, was also hit and is currently in serious but stable condition at the hospital. The driver of the HGV, a 65-year-old man from Berwick-upon-Tweed, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released under investigation.
North Yorkshire Police’s Chief Constable Tim Forber expressed deep sadness over the loss of PC Prior, who was helping others when the tragedy occurred. He emphasized the need to support both families during this incredibly tough time.
PC Prior joined the force as a student officer in May 2022. Her family described her as a loving mother and wife, and they will miss her dearly. Welford’s family also shared their grief, highlighting his role as a devoted father and husband.
The scene was cleared later that evening, and authorities are now seeking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. If you have any information, you can reach out to the police via email.
