A court hears how a young mother’s relationship was fraught with violence and turmoil, leading to her tragic death
Fleetwood: A young mother’s relationship was labeled a “recipe for disaster” in court. But the jury was told her partner isn’t guilty of driving her to suicide.
Ryan Wellings, 30, is on trial for the manslaughter of Kiena Dawes, 23. The court heard he allegedly subjected her to ongoing violence and abuse.
Kiena, a hairdresser, left a heartbreaking note saying, “I was murdered” and that Wellings had “killed me.” Just before her tragic decision, she entrusted their baby to a friend.
The trial has revealed that Wellings’ controlling behavior started early in their relationship. He reportedly wore her down with abuse over time.
Kiena had been diagnosed with an emotionally unstable personality disorder, which made her more vulnerable. The jury learned that Wellings took advantage of her struggles.
While her mental health played a role in her tragic end, the court heard that his abuse was also a significant factor, especially after a serious assault just days before her death.
Paul Greaney KC argued that Wellings was an aggressive bully responsible for Kiena’s death. However, the defense claimed their lifestyle of drugs and alcohol contributed to the chaos.
John Jones KC described their relationship as a “fairytale” that turned into a nightmare, highlighting the mix of mental health issues and substance abuse.
He pointed out that Kiena had attempted suicide multiple times before meeting Wellings, suggesting her struggles were not solely due to him.
Wellings denies all charges, including assault and controlling behavior. The trial is set to continue, with the court adjourned until Wednesday.
