Two trainee police officers apprehended a rapist in Birmingham after he attacked a woman in a park, showcasing their quick response and bravery.
Birmingham: So, here’s the scoop. Two student police officers were out on patrol when they spotted a rapist who had just attacked a woman in a park. It all went down on Golden Hillock Road in Small Heath last August.
The guy, Awalkhan Sultankhail, approached his victim and tried to chat her up. When she walked away, he dragged her into the bushes and assaulted her. Yikes, right?
Luckily, someone saw what was happening and called the cops. Thanks to some CCTV footage and a solid description from the victim, Officers Declan McDevitt and Peter Jones recognized Sultankhail just a few days later while they were patrolling the area.
They chased him down on Ladypool Road, and after a bit of a foot race, they managed to corner him and make the arrest. Talk about a close call!
Pc Jones shared how focused they were during the chase, making sure to keep in touch with other officers to ensure they didn’t lose him. He felt really proud of their teamwork and was glad to help the victim get closer to justice.
In the end, Sultankhail was sentenced to over five years in prison. He initially denied everything but changed his tune when faced with the evidence. Now, he’s off the streets for a while, thanks to the quick actions of these two officers.
Superintendent Emlyn Richards praised their work, saying it was top-notch for officers who are still pretty new on the job. It’s great to see such dedication in action!
