Bacup: It’s a sad day for the community as tributes pour in for Janet Eaton, a former mayoress and councillor. She was known for being kind and caring, always putting others first.

Janet, who lived on Hoghton Avenue, passed away at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital on Christmas Day. She was 74 and leaves behind a loving family.

She dedicated her life to helping others, serving as a Conservative councillor for Irwell ward from 2020 to 2024. Janet was also mayoress from 2002 to 2003, working alongside her husband, James.

Her daughter, Julie, shared how much Janet loved her family and always supported her husband’s charity work. Janet was a familiar face in Bacup, known for her warmth and friendliness.

She worked at Olive House retirement home for a decade, making many friends along the way. Janet even volunteered as a special constable in the 1980s, fulfilling her dream of working with the police.

Janet was a proud grandmother of four and loved watching her granddaughter Charlie perform. The couple had a beautiful love story, having met at a pub and marrying in 1973.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year, surrounded by family and friends. Janet and James enjoyed daily walks with their spaniel dogs and had a great time playing darts and dominoes.

They loved their holidays, often visiting places like Benidorm and Tenerife. Janet’s funeral is set for January 8 at Trinity Baptist Church, followed by a burial at Bacup Cemetery.
