The Hartley community mourns the loss of Richard Chambers, a cherished auto repair owner who passed away at 78, leaving behind a legacy of kindness.
Hartley: It’s a sad time for the folks in Hartley. Richard Chambers, the friendly face behind The Gear Box, has passed away at 78. He was a real gem in the community.
Richard ran his auto repair shop for over 50 years. He was known for his passion for cars and motorsport. Back in the day, he even raced in the RAC rally with his first wife, Vera.
He had a knack for cars, starting with his Mini Cooper S and later racing an Escort RS 2000. He loved tinkering and even rebuilt an AC Cobra engine himself. Talk about dedication!
Richard was always on the go, even flying to America to find engine parts, which he brought back in his hand luggage. He was a true car enthusiast.
In 1996, he married Caron, and they welcomed a son, Harry. Richard was a hands-on dad, teaching Harry to drive at just 13 and taking him racing. He even got him his first car, a Fiesta, at 15.
Before opening his shop in the 70s, Richard worked in a garage in Chatham. He was always there for his customers, making sure they got the parts they needed, often faster than anyone else.
He was looking forward to retirement this spring, ready to enjoy life with his wife, Sue. Plus, he was excited to become a granddad for the first time this February.
His family shared how much he was loved, saying he was a true gentleman who will be missed by many. Customers have been sharing their memories on Facebook, recalling his cheerful nature and helpfulness.
Richard’s funeral is set for January 24 at Thames View Crematorium in Gravesend. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and a community that will always remember him.
