A policewoman and a man tragically lost their lives after being struck by a lorry while assisting at a crash scene in Thirsk
Thirsk: It’s such a sad story. A policewoman named Rosie Prior was helping out at a crash scene when she was hit by a lorry. This happened on the A19 near Thirsk on Saturday morning.
Rosie was standing on the side of the road when she and two others got struck by a heavy goods vehicle. Sadly, both she and Ryan Welford, a 41-year-old man from Knaresborough, died right there.
There was also a teenage boy in Ryan’s car who got hit and is now in the hospital. Thankfully, he’s in serious but stable condition.
The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old from Berwick-upon-Tweed, was arrested for causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released while the investigation continues.
Rosie’s family shared how much they’ll miss her, calling her a loving mum and wife. The Chief Constable expressed deep sadness over the loss, saying they’re doing everything they can to support the families affected.
Local leaders, including the mayor, also expressed their heartbreak, praising Rosie’s dedication to serving the public, even when off duty. It’s clear she was a remarkable person.
Rosie joined the North Yorkshire Police as a student officer in May 2022, and her commitment to her job was evident. Ryan’s family described him as a hardworking and loving man who will be greatly missed.
The scene of the accident was cleared later that day, and authorities are asking anyone with dashcam footage or information to come forward.
