Two ex-police officers in Rotherham face serious charges linked to child sexual abuse from the 1990s, raising concerns about past misconduct.
Rotherham: So, two former police officers have been arrested in connection with some pretty serious child sexual abuse cases that go way back to the 1990s. It’s a big deal, and people are understandably concerned.
One of the guys, now in his 60s, is facing some heavy charges, including misconduct in a public office and attempted rape. The allegations involve two girls from 1995 to 1999, but we don’t know their ages yet.
The other officer, who’s in his 50s, has also been arrested for misconduct and indecent assault related to an incident from 1995-96. Both of them have been released on bail while the investigation continues.
It’s been confirmed that these alleged offenses happened while they were on duty, which makes it even more troubling. The South Yorkshire police are working with the National Crime Agency on this, trying to figure out if there are more victims or suspects out there.
This whole situation is part of a larger investigation called Operation Stovewood, which was set up after a report revealed that over 1,400 girls were abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. It’s a massive operation, costing around £90 million, and it’s the biggest of its kind in the UK.
Hayley Barnett, the assistant chief constable, emphasized that the victims are the top priority. She mentioned how important it is for anyone affected to come forward, no matter how long ago it happened. It’s tough to report these things, especially when it involves former police officers, but they’re committed to getting justice.
Lastly, South Yorkshire police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct regarding these latest allegations, showing they’re taking this seriously.
