A 19-year-old from Tynan has been fined after driving home from Monaghan while intoxicated
Tynan: A young guy named John Jo Gormley, just 19, got into some trouble for driving home from Monaghan while under the influence. He ended up in court and was fined.
So, here’s the scoop. Gormley, who lives on Coolkill Road, was caught by the police around 2am on November 23, 2024. They stopped his silver Seat in Middletown.
When the cops approached, he admitted he borrowed the car from a friend across the border. But they could smell alcohol right away and decided to give him a breath test.
Turns out, he blew a reading of 53 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit in Northern Ireland is 35, so he was over the line.
His lawyer mentioned that Gormley just got his license a year and a half ago and works in Monaghan. He was supposed to get a ride home, but that person had started drinking.
The lawyer asked for some leniency, pointing out Gormley’s early guilty plea and clean record. But the judge, Anne Marshall, was concerned about his inexperience behind the wheel.
In the end, Gormley got a one-year driving ban and a fine of £300, plus a £15 levy. A tough lesson for a young driver!
