UK Athletics faces serious charges after the tragic death of Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei during training in Newham
Newham: So, there’s been a pretty shocking development in the world of athletics. UK Athletics is facing some serious charges after the tragic death of a Paralympic shotputter, Abdullah Hayayei. This all happened back in July 2017 when a metal throwing cage fell on him during training.
Abdullah, who was 36 and from the UAE, was preparing for the World Paralympic Athletics Championships when the accident occurred at a leisure center in east London. It’s just heartbreaking to think about.
The Crown Prosecution Service and the Metropolitan Police have now charged UK Athletics with corporate manslaughter and a health and safety breach. And it doesn’t stop there—Keith Davies, the former Head of Sport at UK Athletics, is also facing charges of gross negligence manslaughter.
He was in charge during the World Championships that year, which makes this even more serious. Both Davies and UK Athletics are set to appear in court on January 31 to face these charges for the first time.
Malcolm McHaffie from the CPS mentioned that they’ve reviewed the evidence and decided to move forward with the charges. It’s a tough situation, and they’re reminding everyone that the legal process is still ongoing, so it’s important to avoid any comments that could affect the case.
