Hundreds of workers face job losses as Unite Hospitality takes action against TGI Fridays
TGI Fridays, which has been around since 1965, went into administration last September. They had to sell off their 87 restaurants, and it turns out 35 of them were closed right away, leading to over a thousand job losses. Ouch!
Among the closures were two spots in Scotland—one in Edinburgh and another in Dundee. Unite Hospitality, the union for these workers, is calling the layoffs a disgrace. They even compared it to the infamous P&O sackings.
The union’s legal team is on it, letting everyone know they’re filing claims for those who were let go during a conference call. Can you believe that? Workers were told they were fired by a CEO who’s still raking in a hefty salary.
Unite is determined to hold the bosses accountable. They’re sending a clear message to any hospitality employer thinking they can just fire people without a heads-up.
Despite the chaos, TGI Fridays still has seven locations open in Scotland. But with the way things are going, who knows what’s next for them?
