A year after the closure of Pontins in Southport, speculation about its future remains unverified and unfounded
Southport: It’s been a whole year since Pontins closed its doors for good. The place was shut down in January 2024 because it just wasn’t making enough money. Since then, it’s been sitting empty, and folks have been buzzing with rumors about what might happen next.
Last September, we learned that Britannia Hotels, which owns Pontins, has a long lease with Sefton Council for the land. They’ve got 150 years on that deal, so it could be a while before anything changes. Britannia runs a bunch of budget hotels across the UK, but they’ve been struggling with this site for years.
Originally built back in 1970, Pontins was once a hot spot for holidaymakers. But over time, it fell out of favor, and many guests left disappointed. The final nail in the coffin came after major flooding during Storm Henk, leading to the park’s permanent closure.
Now, the site has been empty for a year, and it’s still under Britannia’s control. There’s been chatter about turning it into a golf course, but that’s just not true. The local council has said they haven’t heard of any real plans for the site, and any updates would have to come from Britannia.
So, for now, it looks like we’ll have to wait and see what happens with Pontins. The council is just as in the dark as everyone else, and it seems like the future of the site is still very much up in the air.
