The Supreme Court has denied Trump’s request to postpone his sentencing in the hush money case, set for Friday in New York.
New York: So, the Supreme Court just shot down Trump’s last-minute plea to delay his sentencing. It’s happening this Friday, and he’s not getting a break.
The justices voted 5-4 against him, meaning he’ll be sentenced just before he’s supposed to take office again. Can you believe it?
Trump, who’s 78, was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records. This whole mess is tied to an alleged affair with Stormy Daniels, the adult film star.
The Court mentioned that some of Trump’s concerns could be sorted out later on appeal. They also said the sentencing wouldn’t really mess with his responsibilities as president-elect.
So, he’s set to be sentenced in Manhattan at 9:30 AM. The judge has hinted that he might not even face jail time, which is a bit surprising.
In their brief order, the justices pointed out that any issues from the trial could be handled later. They also said the impact on Trump’s duties would be pretty minor.
His lawyers have been trying to get this whole thing thrown out, claiming it would disrupt his transition into the White House. They argued that it’s a risk to national security.
But prosecutors shot that down, saying he’s not the president yet, so he doesn’t get any special treatment.
Justice Merchan, who’s overseeing the case, has suggested he might go easy on Trump, possibly giving him an unconditional discharge instead of jail time.
Trump has called this whole situation an “illegitimate political attack” on his Truth Social platform. He was found guilty of falsifying records to cover up a payment to Daniels, which he claims was to protect his campaign.
This is a big deal because it’s the first time a former president has been convicted of a crime. Even though this is a class E felony, experts think he might avoid prison.
