The Cockfield Village Group is raising funds to purchase the Plough and Fleece for a community hub, shop, and café.
Cockfield: Residents are excited about the chance to buy their local pub and turn it into a community hub. It’s a great idea, right?
On Monday, the Cockfield Village Group kicked off a plan for folks to buy shares in this venture. They want to make the Plough and Fleece a lively spot for everyone.
They’re also looking to move the village shop and post office there, plus start a café. Sounds like a fun place to hang out!
Peter Finch, who leads the Village Group, along with Virginia Adam and Barbara Turner, are all in on this project. The pub is up for sale, but the price is still a mystery.
It’s been marked as an asset of community value after a failed attempt to turn it into a house. So, it’s still got potential!
Vincent Scholier, the group’s secretary, mentioned they started gathering pledges in 2023 and managed to raise about £77,000. That’s a solid start!
They also took over running the village shop and post office when the owners retired. Now, they need to find a new home for the shop, and the pub seems perfect.
They’ve got a business plan ready to go, aiming to create a vibrant hub for all ages. With more people moving into the village since the pub closed in 2019, they really need this.
The Plough and Fleece is a two-story pub with a bar, dining area, and kitchen. It’s got room for about 20 diners, plus space for games and drinks.
The Village Group is set up as a Community Benefit Society, meaning any profits will go back into the community. How cool is that?
They’re hoping to raise £250,000 through shares, which will be supported by loans and grants. Cockfield has around 1,000 residents, and they’re counting on the wider community to chip in.
Vincent noted that the pub used to be super popular. But with pubs struggling lately, they think relocating the shop and adding a café will help keep it going.
South Suffolk MP, James Cartlidge, is backing their plans, saying it’s in the community’s best interest. If you want to learn more, check out their website.
People can buy shares until March 16, with prices ranging from £25 to £25,000. It’s a great way to get involved!
