Walworth Town Hall has reopened after a decade, showcasing stunning renovations and new community spaces for locals to enjoy
Walworth: The Town Hall is back in action after being closed for over ten years. It was a real mess after that fire in 2013, but wow, they’ve done an amazing job fixing it up.
This historic building, which dates back to 1894, was almost torn down. But now, it’s a vibrant hub for local businesses and community groups. It’s right on Walworth Road, so it’s super accessible.
After the fire, the future looked pretty grim for the Grade II listed building. It was even marked as ‘at risk’ by Historic England. But thanks to General Projects and Southwark Council, it’s been given a fresh start.
When you walk in, you’re greeted by a stunning double staircase. It officially opened today, and it’s got everything from coworking spaces to a community center and even a cool pan-Asian café called Jusu Brothers.
For years, the place was hidden behind hoardings, but now there’s a grand entrance leading to Walworth Square. Last year, they estimated the whole site could be worth around £25 million once it was all done.
The building spans 50,000 square feet and includes the old Newington Library and Cuming Museum. The architects did a fantastic job keeping the historic features while adding eco-friendly materials like cross-laminated timber.
Joanna Lee, the Managing Director at General Projects, mentioned that many younger locals might not have even seen the building without its hoarding. She’s excited to see how the community will use the new spaces.
Cllr Helen Dennis, Southwark’s Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, expressed her pride in seeing this piece of Southwark’s history restored. It’s a fantastic resource for everyone in Walworth and beyond.
