Experts warn that storing certain items in boiler cupboards can lead to serious fire risks
London: In many homes across the UK, boiler cupboards are often used for extra storage. But experts are raising concerns about this practice, especially when it comes to fire safety. Joanna Flowers, a Service and Repair Engineer at British Gas, has some important advice for homeowners.
She points out that flammable items like clothes, linens, and even cleaning supplies should never be stored near a boiler. The enclosed space can get hot, and that’s a recipe for disaster.
Joanna also warns against hanging clothes near the boiler. It might seem handy to drape jackets or towels over it, but that can lead to overheating and potential fires. If those items fall, they could cause serious issues.
Even if nothing falls, blocking airflow can make the boiler work harder, which isn’t good for safety or efficiency. So, it’s best to keep clothes and other items away from the boiler altogether.
Boilers have specific clearance requirements, usually needing at least 50 mm from walls and 600 mm in front for maintenance. Joanna suggests keeping any stored items at least 600 mm away from the boiler.
To keep your boiler cupboard safe, regular checks are key. Make sure it’s clean and free of clutter. Ensuring there’s no obstruction to vents and that the area is open can really help with safety and performance. Remember, a tidy space is a safer space!
