Warrington Borough Council is tackling a projected overspend of nearly £20 million
Warrington: The council’s latest figures show they’ve managed to cut their overspend forecast by over £8 million. That’s a pretty big deal!
Back in the second quarter, they were looking at an overspend of £28.1 million. But now, as of the end of October, that number has dropped to about £19.9 million. Progress, right?
Different departments are stepping up to help bring those numbers down. For instance, the families and wellbeing services have slashed their overspend by £2.2 million. Plus, corporate finance is looking better too.
To tackle the budget issues, the council is tightening its belt. They’re limiting spending to only what’s necessary, keeping some positions vacant, and even running a voluntary redundancy scheme.
Cllr Denis Matthews, who handles finance and investments, mentioned that while a £19.9 million overspend is still a lot, the latest report shows they’re making headway. He appreciates all the hard work from the council staff who are juggling service demands while trying to find savings.
He added that they’ll keep pushing to lower that overspend even more. Sure, tough choices are on the horizon, but they’re committed to working together to find solutions.
