Gavin & Stacey’s finale gripped Wales, drawing in 59% of the population, a record since 2002, surpassing even the 2012 Olympics viewership.
The finale episode did really well, with lots of people watching it. About 1.8 million folks in Wales watched it, which is 59 percent of people there and a record. It’s the top show in Wales since 2002, beating the 2012 Olympics opening, which had 1.4 million viewers.
Welsh people watched the finale twice, often doing so twice as much as others in the UK. Across the UK, 2.8 million watched more than once. In Wales, 245,000 people watched it twice, which is eight percent of Wales’ population, compared to four percent in the UK.
Folks near Barry watched it on iPlayer more; they were 29 percent more likely to do so. These viewers had a CF postcode. “A Fond Farewell” also did great across the UK; this BBC Wales show got 8.7 million views and is a record breaker.
BBC Cymru Wales made that documentary, “A Fond Farewell.” It had the cast and big fans, looking back on 14 years of the show. Rhuanedd Richards, who runs BBC Cymru Wales, feels proud of the show’s success as it did well in Wales and the UK.
Richards said the show is Welsh and a very loved sitcom that has been on for 17 years now. Wales feels connected to the program really well, and the viewing numbers definitely show that off.
