Hillingdon Council proposes significant fee increases for social care, impacting self-funders and aiming to address rising care costs
Hillingdon: Residents in Hillingdon who rely on social care might soon face hefty charges. The council’s Cabinet just voted to start a consultation on this plan.
This change mainly targets ‘self-funders’—those with assets over £23,250. If you’re below that, you’re in the clear. So, no worries there!
Now, how does this work? Well, the council wants to introduce a one-time ‘set-up fee’ of £470. This covers the basics like finding care providers and setting up contracts.
After that, self-funders could see an extra £255 added to their bills each year. This annual fee would help manage the care services and handle any questions residents might have.
Social care can be a lifeline for folks dealing with mental health issues or disabilities. It includes everything from personal care at home to support with daily tasks.
Councillor Jane Palmer mentioned that the council aims to be fair and transparent, especially since they recently got a good rating from the Care Quality Commission.
With care costs rising, the council is trying to keep up. They’ve noticed that while income from social care has increased, the debt owed to them has skyrocketed.
They believe a clearer policy will help residents understand their financial responsibilities and how to claim benefits to ease their burden.
They estimate this new policy could bring in about £72,000 a year, which would help reduce client debt and prevent future issues. The consultation start date is still up in the air, but they’re hoping to roll things out by April.
