Erin Strotman faces serious charges after multiple premature babies suffered unexplained fractures while in her care at a Virginia hospital
Henrico: A neonatal nurse named Erin Strotman, just 26 years old, has been charged with some serious stuff. She’s facing charges of malicious wounding and felony child abuse after several premature babies in her care ended up with unexplained fractures.
This all started around November 10, 2024, when one baby was found with these mysterious injuries. Strotman appeared in court recently, and it was pretty emotional as she faced families of other babies who also suffered injuries while she was on duty.
Authorities haven’t shared many details about how many babies were affected or the specifics of their injuries. They’ve been going through tons of video footage from the NICU to figure out what went wrong.
In light of the situation, the hospital decided to stop admitting new babies to the NICU until they get to the bottom of this. It’s a tough time for everyone involved.
Strotman was arrested on January 2, 2024, and it turns out she had been on paid leave for a year after some earlier reports of child abuse in the NICU. She was allowed to return to work in the fall of 2024, but now her employment has been terminated.
Interestingly, during her court appearance, it came out that she was still getting paid even after being fired. That’s just wild, right?
She’s been a registered nurse since May 2019 and studied at ECPI University in Richmond. But now, she’s sitting in jail and has been ordered to stay away from kids under 18.
As for the victims, only one family has come forward so far. A dad named Dominique Hackey shared that his twin son, Noah, suffered a fractured leg while in the NICU. It was a tough blow, especially since his mother, a former NICU nurse, was the one who raised the alarm.
Hackey expressed his confusion and heartbreak, saying it’s hard to understand how someone could care for one baby and harm another. He learned that his son was one of several babies injured, and it’s just heartbreaking to hear that some kids had multiple fractures.
The hospital released a statement expressing their shock and sadness over the situation, emphasizing their commitment to patient care. The police are still investigating and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
