Local leaders are calling for urgent measures to safeguard Wickford businesses from a series of break-ins
Wickford: Recently, there’s been a troubling rise in break-ins that has left local business owners feeling anxious. Melissa McGeorge, a Labour councillor, is stepping up to demand action from the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Roger Hirst. She wants him to do something fast to protect these businesses from being targeted again.
It’s been a rough few months, with at least seven businesses suffering from smashed windows and stolen items. Owners are understandably scared about what might happen next. Just imagine running a small shop and feeling like you could be hit at any moment.
McGeorge pointed out that these small businesses are vital to the community. They put their heart and soul into their work, and it’s heartbreaking to see them face such vicious attacks. She believes that without proper support and protection, many of them might not survive.
The latest incident involved Inpressed dry cleaners, which was hit for the second time in six months. Just a few days ago, places like Posh Boys Taproom and the Post Office were also targeted. It’s a real mess, and it’s happening way too often.
Allison Matthews, who runs a shop on the High Street, had to deal with a burglary that caused £1,000 in damage. That’s a huge hit for any small business. McGeorge insists that more police presence, especially at night, could help deter these criminals and give business owners some peace of mind.
In response, Roger Hirst has urged the council to focus on initiatives that can help protect Wickford businesses. He mentioned that the Essex Police Business Crime Team is aware of the situation and is ready to discuss joint funding for projects aimed at improving safety.
