Nairn: Veronica Wilson recently met with John Swinney, and she was really thankful for the chance to talk about her husband Alistair’s murder back in 2004. She and her son Andrew shared their concerns about the ongoing investigation.

It was a shocking incident. A man came to their door, asked for Alistair, handed him an envelope, and then shot him. The killer is still out there, which is incredibly frustrating for the family.

Last September, Scotland’s top law officer ordered a full reinvestigation of the case. A new team of police officers and prosecutors is now on it, but the family feels let down by the police. Veronica mentioned that it’s really upsetting that Police Scotland’s Chief Constable Jo Farrell won’t meet with them.

Veronica expressed her gratitude to John Swinney for listening to them. She said it was refreshing to have someone in a position of power who is willing to engage and look into their concerns. In contrast, she feels insulted by the Chief Constable’s refusal to meet.

Andrew, who was just four when his father was killed, also joined the meeting. He shared how hard it’s been growing up with this unsolved case hanging over them. He echoed his mother’s frustration about the lack of communication from the police.

In a letter, Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson explained that it’s important for the new investigating officers to build a relationship with the family, which is why Jo Farrell hasn’t met with them yet. He assured them that the focus is on completing the reinvestigation thoroughly.

Douglas Ross, the local MSP, called the meeting a positive step. He hopes it will help the family get the answers they desperately need. He also criticized the Chief Constable for not meeting with the Wilsons, calling it a dereliction of duty.

Police Scotland has been asked for a comment on the situation.
