Concerns grow over the future of Spalding’s former Bull and Monkie pub site
Spalding: There’s been a lot of chatter about the old Bull and Monkie pub site. People are wondering if 2025 will finally see some action or if it’ll just stay a mess.
It’s been almost nine months since the planning committee hit pause on a proposal to tear down the pub and build an 88-bed care home. Since then, it’s been pretty quiet.
No new updates have come from Crispin Holdings, the company behind the plans, and the council hasn’t said when it’ll be back on the agenda. This has left many feeling like the chance to improve the site might slip away.
Local councillor Dave Ashby is worried. He mentioned that it’s a shame to have such a prime spot just sitting there, especially when someone is willing to invest in it.
He was part of the committee that deferred the decision but voted in favor of moving forward. He’s concerned that the site could remain an eyesore forever, especially with the historic church nearby.
Another councillor, Mark Le Sage, echoed those sentiments. He pointed out how the Bull and Monkie looks terrible next to beautiful buildings like Ayscoughfee and St Mary’s Church.
He stressed the importance of doing something with the site, especially since they’re spending money to spruce up the area around High Bridge.
However, the proposed care home has faced pushback. Many locals think the four-story building would be too much for the riverside area, and there are worries about parking space.
The civic society raised issues about not having enough parking, outdoor space, and even access for mobility vehicles. They’re also concerned about how refuse collection would work.
John Bland, the society chairman, has been vocal about the need for the new development to respect the area’s history. He hopes the developers will collaborate with local groups to find a suitable plan.
We’ve reached out to the architects for their take on the situation. Meanwhile, graffiti has appeared on the Bull and Monkie, highlighting the neglect of the site.
So, what do you think? Have we missed a chance to turn the Bull and Monkie into something great? Feel free to share your thoughts below!
