A woman passed away two days after being admitted for severe vomiting and abdominal pain
Huddersfield: A tragic incident unfolded at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary when a woman named Gemma Marshall, 46, died after complications from her gastric band. She had gone to the hospital with alarming symptoms like black vomiting and severe abdominal pain.
Sadly, Gemma collapsed in the shower just two days after her admission and couldn’t be revived. A post-mortem revealed that her gastric band had slipped, twisting her stomach and causing serious complications, including an irregular heartbeat.
After looking into her case, the coroner found that a CT scan didn’t properly report the issue with the gastric band. This oversight meant Gemma wasn’t referred to the right specialists in time, which could have saved her life.
The coroner, Steve Eccleston, pointed out that this was a clear case of neglect in her care. He emphasized that the radiologist who reviewed the scan wasn’t specialized in gastric issues, which contributed to the failure to catch the problem.
He also noted that this isn’t just a local issue; it’s a concern across the country. The hospital is working to improve knowledge about these types of complications, but there’s still a risk for other patients.
In response to the findings, the chief executive of the hospital expressed condolences to Gemma’s family and acknowledged the importance of patient safety. They’re committed to learning from this tragic event.
