A woman recounts the tragic accident that led to her losing limbs at a London Tube station, sparking a safety campaign.
London: A woman named Sarah de Lagarde shared a terrifying story about how she lost her arm and leg at a Tube station. It all happened when she fell asleep on the train and missed her stop.
She was at High Barnet station, trying to catch a Northern Line train. When she stepped off briefly, she slipped and fell into the gap between the train and the platform. Unfortunately, the train left, and that’s when her right arm was torn off.
To make matters worse, another train came along and ran over her right leg. Sarah was already hurt, with a broken nose and damaged teeth from the fall. She couldn’t even call for help because her face injuries made her phone’s Face ID useless, and it was too wet to use the passcode.
After the accident, Sarah had to have her right leg and arm amputated. Now, she has a bionic arm, but her life has changed dramatically. She’s been advocating for better safety on the Transport for London network.
Despite her efforts, she’s faced rejection when trying to meet with London Mayor Sadiq Khan. This has left her feeling frustrated, and she’s considering legal action as her only option.
“I will never step foot on the Tube again,” she said. “If it wasn’t safe when I had four limbs, it definitely won’t be safe now.” She’s determined to fight for her children and other commuters in London.
Sarah’s daily life is now a struggle. She can’t drive, cook, or even zip up her clothes without help. Prosthetic limbs are costly, and she only managed to get hers through crowdfunding. “My life has been ruined,” she admitted.
Her children, who were 8 and 12 at the time, are now helping her, which is tough for her as a parent. They’re all trying to adapt to this new reality together.
In response to her legal claim, Nick Dent from London Underground said they’re taking the matter seriously and have offered support through the Sarah Hope Line. He emphasized that safety is their top priority and they’re committed to learning from incidents like this.
